Hotel Wi-Fi Checks: Connections, HTTPS and Account Security

Verify the hotspot

Ask hotel staff for the network name and normal sign-in procedure. Signal strength or a familiar-looking name is not proof of authenticity. Avoid installing unknown profiles, certificates or applications to complete network access.

Respect browser warnings

Before signing into an important account, check the address and HTTPS status. Stop and investigate certificate or dangerous-site warnings. HTTPS protects the connection but does not establish that a business or its content is trustworthy.

Protect devices and accounts

Keep systems and applications updated. Use different passwords for important accounts and enable available multifactor authentication. Avoid saving sensitive accounts on public computers. Disable automatic reconnection or forget a public hotspot after leaving.

Understand the VPN boundary

A VPN can change the route and protection of covered traffic, depending on the client’s implementation and settings. It does not guarantee protection from phishing, malicious downloads or account theft, and does not replace HTTPS. Consider a trusted mobile data connection when the network cannot be verified.
